Is there a Gmail app for Mac or Windows?
No. Google makes Gmail apps for Android and iOS, but none for macOS or Windows: on a computer, Gmail is a website. You can install that website as an app, so it opens in its own window with its own icon, or add your Gmail account to a desktop mail program such as Apple Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird.
Install Gmail as an app from your browser
- Chrome: open
mail.google.com, click the ⋮ menu, then Cast, save, and share → Install page as app. - Edge: open
mail.google.com, click the ⋯ menu, then Apps (under More tools in some versions) → Install this site as an app. - Safari on a Mac (macOS Sonoma or later): open
mail.google.com, then File → Add to Dock.
It is the same Gmail as in a tab, in its own window. It can notify you only while that window is open.
Use a mail program
Apple Mail on a Mac, Outlook on Windows and Mac, and Thunderbird everywhere can add a Gmail account: choose Google when you add the account and sign in on Google’s page. These programs notify while they are running, and keep a copy of your mail on your computer.
About “Gmail” apps in app stores
Apps named after Gmail in the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store are made by other developers, not by Google. Check the developer’s name before you sign in to one.
If you only want to know what came in
An app window or a mail program is a whole mail client. If what you miss is knowing when something arrives, a notifier does that from your browser without another window: Peekat Email is a free one for Chrome and Edge, for every Gmail account you use. See what a Gmail notifier is.
