Peekat notifications not showing? Fix them step by step
Peekat asks the browser to show a notification, and the browser hands it to your computer. Almost always, one of three switches holds it back: the computer’s permission for the browser, Focus or Do not disturb, or the browser’s own. Peekat cannot see those switches, so its settings send a test and, when you click Didn’t see it?, walk you through the same steps as this page, one at a time, with a test after each.
macOS
-
System Settings › Notifications › Google Chrome
Allow Google Chrome to notify
Turn on Allow notifications, and Desktop if you see it.
-
System Settings › Notifications › Google Chrome
Show banners
Alert Style: Temporary or Persistent. On macOS 15 and earlier: Banners or Alerts, not None.
-
System Settings › Focus
Turn off Focus
While a Focus is on, banners wait. Turn it off, or allow Google Chrome in it.
-
Notification Center
Clear old notifications
A long pile of old notifications can hold new banners back. Click the date and time in the menu bar, clear them, then send again.
Windows 11
-
Settings › System › Notifications
Allow Google Chrome to notify
Turn on Notifications, then Google Chrome in the list.
-

Turn off Do not disturb
It also turns on by itself in full screen and games. Missed tests wait in Notification center · Win + N.

Linux
-
Settings › Notifications
Allow Google Chrome to notify

Turn off Do not disturb

-
Settings › System
Keep Google Chrome running
Turn on “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed”, so Peekat checks mail with every window closed.
Microsoft Edge and Firefox
The steps above name Google Chrome; in Edge and Firefox look for that browser in the same lists. Edge names its background setting differently, and Firefox has none: Peekat checks mail only while a Firefox window is open.
-
Settings › System and performance
Keep Microsoft Edge running
Turn on “Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed”, so Peekat checks mail with every window closed.
When the browser refuses the test
If Peekat says the browser turned its notifications off, the block sits in the browser itself, and no setting turns it back on.
-
Turn Peekat's notifications back on
The browser turned off Peekat's notifications. Removing Peekat and adding it again turns them back on; then add your accounts again.
When Peekat itself is quiet
Pause and quiet hours hold back new mail’s notifications on purpose. The test still shows, so they never explain a missing test; Peekat’s troubleshooter says so when either is on.
-
Notifications paused
New mail stays silent until you resume. Tests still show.
