Outlook in Peekat Email (beta)
Peekat Email checks Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live accounts beside your Gmail accounts, in one list, with the same quiet notifications and one-click codes. Outlook is in beta. To add an account, open Peekat’s Accounts page, choose Add Outlook and sign in through Microsoft’s own window. Your mail is read only from Microsoft and stays on your device. A work or school account may need its organization’s admin to allow Peekat first.
Adding an Outlook account
- Open Peekat’s full app (Open full app in the toolbar popup’s ⋯ menu) and choose Accounts in the sidebar.
- Next to Add Outlook account, choose Add Outlook. Microsoft opens its sign-in window.
- Sign in, and allow Peekat Email to read and manage your mail. Microsoft shows exactly what it asks for; the list is below.
- The account appears in Peekat beside your others, with an Outlook tag on the Accounts page. Add as many as you use.
Peekat never sees your Microsoft password: you type it into Microsoft’s window, not Peekat’s. Outlook in Peekat works in Chrome and Edge; it is not in Safari yet.
If the window closes without adding the account, Peekat says why in one line: mail access was not allowed, the Microsoft account has no Outlook.com inbox (one made with another provider’s address), the address is already in Peekat as a Gmail account, or it is a work account that needs its admin.
What Peekat can see and do
Microsoft’s window asks for these permissions, and no others:
| Permission | What Peekat uses it for |
|---|---|
Mail.ReadWrite | To count, list and open your mail, and to mark read, flag, archive, or move to Junk or Deleted Items when you ask. |
offline_access | To stay signed in between checks, without asking you again every hour. |
openid | To sign you in with your Microsoft account. |
email | To learn which account you added: its address and, if Microsoft provides it, your name. |
- Peekat cannot send mail, and does not ask for your contacts, calendar or files. Reply, Forward and writing a new message open Outlook on the web.
- Inbox is the whole inbox, Focused and Other together; it is what notifies, as Primary does for Gmail. Folders you made show up like Gmail’s labels.
- Images in Outlook mail load from the sender’s servers, as they do in Outlook.com, so a sender can learn when you opened a message. Gmail mail keeps Google’s image proxy.
- Your mail goes from Microsoft straight to your browser and stays on your device. It is never sent to us. The privacy policy has the full detail.
Staying signed in
Microsoft asks apps like Peekat to renew their sign-in once a day. Peekat does it by itself, without a window, while you are signed in to Microsoft (for example at outlook.com) in the same browser. A restart of the browser is renewed the same way.
If you are signed out of Microsoft in that browser, the account says Sign in to Outlook again; one click on Reconnect Outlook opens Microsoft’s window, and the account carries on where it was. Nothing is lost while it waits.
Work and school accounts
Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live and MSN accounts are the supported case. A work or school Microsoft account (Microsoft 365) works when its organization lets you add apps yourself, which many do not. Then Microsoft’s window says you need an admin’s approval, and Peekat shows Ask your admin to allow Peekat. If the window offers Request approval, use it: your request reaches your admin directly.
What to tell your admin:
- The app is Peekat Email, a browser extension by OPENMIND AI INC. It asks only for the delegated permissions above (
Mail.ReadWrite,offline_access,openid,email): it acts as the signed-in user, on that user’s own mailbox, and has no access of its own. - It has no server. Mail goes from Microsoft Graph straight to the user’s browser and stays on their device. Nothing is sent to us. See the privacy policy.
- To allow it for everyone, an admin can approve the request under Enterprise applications → Admin consent requests in the Microsoft Entra admin center, or open Enterprise applications → Peekat Email → Permissions and grant admin consent. Microsoft may list the publisher as unverified until its publisher check is done; that is about Microsoft’s record of the company, not about what the app can reach.
- Need the app’s client ID, or anything else for a review? Write to hi@peekat.email.
Some organizations allow no apps outside their own list, whatever the permissions. Then Peekat cannot check that account, and Outlook on the web stays the way to read it.
What beta means here
- Outlook has an inbox where Gmail has tabs, so Promotions, Social, Updates and Forums never apply to an Outlook account.
- A few Gmail-only links are left out for Outlook, such as Find emails from and Show original; Outlook on the web has no address to open them at.
- Found something off? Write to hi@peekat.email. Known issues are on the status page.
Removing an account
On Peekat’s Accounts page, remove the account: Peekat signs it out and forgets everything it kept for it. To end access at Microsoft as well, remove Peekat Email at account.live.com/consent/Manage (personal accounts) or myapps.microsoft.com (work or school accounts).
